«They hold the wake in his studio, surrounded by busts and torsos. It’s what Iannis Aramaki would have wanted. His death is a success, full of models, artists, beautiful bodies. Gómez gets his bag stolen right there at the viewing. He thinks it’s disrespectful. Nora says: We could make green beans and tzatziki, in honor of the deceased. Gómez says: Why not? And follows it with: What a sorry group.»
Damages consists of twenty-one stories that embrace coarseness and black humor and explore, among other questions, the end––of friendship, of love, of life––the advice others give, lost parakeets, god meals, the scourge of tourism, literary movements, the forms of faith, belief, the often hilarious way human beings confront tragedy. Agile, simple, and profoundly alive, the stories in Damages are an irreverent and uncomfortable collection, sometimes dark and disturbing, sometimes hilarious and grotesque.
The Documenta jury praised their “clean and vibrant style, with polished and extremely vivid language and a very healthy touch of darkness and crudity. The narrative voice behind these tales is self-assured and ambitious, and the skill in the construction of each story is more than noteworthy.”
