(Eight Centimeters) What is the distance separating sorrow and joy? In a shanty town, a born-again gypsy preacher declares to a frenzied gathering of followers that the distance between one and the other is eight centimetres. It is in this minute space that Nuria Barros sets her bold, pulsating stories: where all is not yet lost, where writing can reveal borderlands that rarely see the light of day. These eleven stories have a hard edge and shine with a harsh light. They are eleven diamonds. They cut to the bone. Is that not just what we look for in literature? That it dig deep, that it enlighten us, that it pull no punches.

«Eleven indisputable stories. Barrios has written his best book. And one of the best storybooks I have read in a long time.» J. Ernesto Ayala Dip, El País

«Barrios prose is like a blues song, like a balm for pain (…) pain as a way to illuminate life, as a source of knowledge.» Enrique Turpin, La Vanguardia

«An exceptional book. A beautiful, stark and moving collection of short-stories.» Pilar Castro, El Mundo

«A handful of stories subtly interwoven as if by silken threads, which makethem hang together. Pain, drama and lives that explode like a land mine before the reader’s eyes.»
