Sabina Urraca (San Sebastián, 1984) is a writer and editor. She grew up in Tenerife and has lived in Madrid for more than 20 years. She studied Audiovisual Communication at the Complutense University of Madrid and Screenwriting at the Madrid Film School (ECAM). She has worked as an insurance saleswoman, public relations, television reporter, television and advertising creative, and marijuana trimmer.
She is the author of the novels Las niñas prodigio (Fulgencio Pimentel, 2017), which won the Javier Morote Award, granted by CEGAL and selected by New Spanish Books, a program focused on the translation of works in Spanish; Soñó con la chica que robaba un caballo (Lengua de trapo, 2021); Chachachá (Dueto) (Comisura, 2023); and El celo (Alfaguara, 2024).
She has also participated in the anthologies Verónica Verónica Verónica (Bcn Producció, La Capella, 2023), Hospitalidad contra pronóstico (Bartlebooth y Concomitentes, 2023), Tranquilas. Historias para ir solas de noche (Lumen, 2019), and La errabunda (Lindo y Espinosa, 2018). Her short stories and translations of some chapters of her books have been published in journals such as The White Review (UK), The Washington Square Review (USA), Picnic (Mexico), Mercurio, Los Bárbaros, Salvaje, Matador, and La pública. She has also contributed columns, articles, and essays to media outlets like El País, El Cultural, Vice, and Cinemanía. She writes a monthly column for the literary magazine Zenda. She has taught writing workshops in Spain, Mexico, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
In 2020, she received the 10 de 30 fellowship, an initiative promoting the internationalization of Spanish writers, through which she gave talks at the Instituto Cervantes in Chicago and Georgetown University in Washington. In 2019, she debuted as an editor with Panza de burro by Andrea Abreu (Editorial Barrett), as part of the Editora por un libro project. In 2020, she received the MFA in Spanish Creative Writing fellowship from the University of Iowa. She is the resident editor of the Caballo de Troya imprint (Penguin Random House) during 2023 and 2024. In 2022, she received the Leonardo Fellowship for Creators from the BBVA Foundation. In 2023, she was a beneficiary of the literary residency at the Finestres Foundation. In 2024, she was invited to the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL).
