L’home de la casa

The Man of the House | La Magrana, 2025

«This is my home. My home is so cold in winter that we have to turn on the heating, and so hot in summer that we have to open all the windows to let the air in. Sometimes, it gets so unbearably hot that we go to Grandma’s house to stand under the garden hose or head to the Country Club for a swim. My home used to be where my father, my mother, my sister Maria, and I lived. But not anymore.»

This novel is a journey through the tender, innocent eyes of a child watching the adult world crumble around him—a story about the anger, helplessness, and sadness that come with it. Enric’s parents were the first in town to divorce under the new law, and like many of his neighbors, young Enric doesn’t quite understand what’s happening.

L’home de la casa explores a child’s place in the world. It speaks of present mothers and absent fathers, of what it means to be a man and what a man is expected to do, of what it means to be a woman and the roles imposed on her. At its heart, the novel is a literary tribute to the mother, who was forced into her role by a society that left her no choice.
