Sala Augusta seguit de Llengua Materna

Sala Augusta followed by Mother Tongue | Proa, 2025

A magnificent book made up of two long poems of collective and personal memory.

Sala Augusta is a movie theater in the center of Palma, built on the site of what had been a Francoist prison during the war, where Republican prisoners awaited execution in inhumane conditions. The poem evokes the men and women who were victims of the 1936 fascist uprising in Mallorca.

Mother Tongue, which follows, refers to the death of the author’s mother. Here the memory becomes personal, intimate, but at the same time pays tribute to the riveters or shoe seamstresses who, from the 1940s to the 1980s, worked in the Mallorcan footwear industry, which was swept away by tourism, sewing shoes in their homes with no labor rights whatsoever.
