Sobre la distància. Catalunya-Espanya

On Distance. Catalonia – Spain | Ediciones 62, 2008

In the same way that the idea of Catalonia cannot be understood by the Catalans without keeping the embers of conflict alive, nor can the theoretical visions of Spanishness dispense with the permanent suspicion that Spain isn’t quite as it seems. The two entities have a problem with knowledge and recognition.

For 20 years, Joan Barril has followed the day-to-day of the multiple voices that have expressed various concepts of Spain or Catalonia and has always defended the capacity for understanding and mutual respect. The book is a demonstration of that and an intimate refusal of the artificial distance induced by politician.

«In this book Joan Barril’s viewpoints transmit the same mental freedom that he knows how to put in his fables. He reasons that ideological speeches lead nowhere and instead, the proximity of the people, cohabitation and complicity can breed miracles. (…) The unexpected human factor is often the great “solver” in Barril’s world.» Carles Barba, Culturas de La Vanguardia
